RV Fun, Safety and Insurance

Thursday, May 20th, 2010

With summer almost here and kids being let out of school, families across the country will be taking to the road in campers and RV’s to spend some quality time together. Whether you own an RV, or are renting one for an extended trip, RVing across the country can be a great way to see the sights and spend quality time with your family.

Before heading out to the open road in your RV, make sure your vehicle is ready to hit the road. First and foremost, it is essential that you have the right insurance on your vehicle. If you own the RV, make sure your policy is up to date. If you are renting an RV, check with the RV company about adding extra insurance. In most cases your car insurance policy will not cover any damage to or items stolen from your rented RV.

Once you have your insurance in place and up-to-date, it’s time to consider safety before you go. If you are renting an RV, you may not be as familiar with driving a large vehicle, so you should practice driving it before you set out on a long journey. Understand that it will take you longer to stop, turn and accelerate in comparison to driving a smaller car. Other safety precautions you may wish to take with your RV are as follows:

• Have a fire extinguisher ready             • Check propane tanks for leaks

• Place locks on windows and doors     • Have a carbon monoxide detector

If you follow these safety tips, you are sure to have a safe and fun summer of RVing with your family!  For more information, please see the Poliseek.com RV Resources section.

Speeding Tickets and Your Insurance

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

Let’s face it; some of us tend to speed a little when getting to where we need to go is important.  While some drive close to the posted speed limit, others use that posted sign as a guideline for the minimum speed they must drive.  Excessive speeding is not only dangerous, but it can cost you plenty of money to keep up with this bad habit.  Driving well over the posted speed limit can drastically reduce the gas mileage your car achieves, and if you get caught, a speeding ticket will impose a large fine and can cause your car insurance premium to increase.

Some may think that if you are in another state and you get a speeding ticket, it won’t show up on your home state record.  This is not the case.  A speeding ticket received in any state will affect your driving record and insurance premium no matter where you live.

If you are in the market for new auto insurance, it is important that you report any traffic violations that you have received, in state or not.  Not reporting them initially may get you the quote price you want, but eventually those infractions will show up, forcing your premium to sky rocket.
